Kindly refer to Periodization,
which lists the sequence of breast exercise progressions starting
with Phase
1 (immediately post-surgery) and chronologically proceeding
through Phase 4 (10
weeks post-surgery). The book includes an additional (4) four-chapter
section titled Beyond Phase
4: Spinal Stabilization, Abdominals, Lower
Extremities, and Adjuvant Treatments. The last program,
Above and Beyond, is an Interval Training workout that combines endurance
and strength training to increase the metabolic rate and improve
body composition, bone density, and muscle tone simultaneously.
All phases and programs have been scientifically designed for your safety and progress. Timing is dependent upon the physical condition of the individual, the length of the healing process, type of surgery involved, courses and types of adjuvant treatments, and recommendations of physicians, nurses and physical therapists. Variables, e.g., low blood counts, fatigue, nausea, muscle, joint or bone pain may exist temporarily and will change intermittently. They will and should effect particular exercise choices at given times. Consulting with one's health care practitioners and using sound judgement are of the utmost importance when making safe choices.
Each phase of Staying Abreast is composed of approximately 7 - 15 different exercises. The program has been designed clearly and concisely with specific instructions and illustrations, and can be utilized by everyone (from the most experienced exerciser to patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and radiation). Many of the exercises are interchangeable within and among the different phases. Please be certain to pay special attention to instructions regarding form, moving gently and slowly, breathing, and numbers of sets and repetitions.
We suggest that you briefly scan the entire book before exercising, in order to obtain an overview of the concepts of Staying Abreast. This information is contained in the book in Exploring the Book...How To.
