General Program Goals
  • To elevate endorphin levels: relieve tension, depression, weakness, and fatigue
  • To prevent lymphedema by promoting drainage of lymph fluids
  • To prevent formation of scar tissue and frozen shoulder
  • To provide a comprehensive working knowledge of proper body mechanics related to one's specific needs and physical conditions
  • To restore upright posture after surgery
  • To relieve stiffness in neck, back, chest and shoulders
  • To restore and maintain range of motion, strength and flexibility to involved areas of body
  • To increase lung capacity post-surgery/anesthesia
  • To improve cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary fitness
  • And most important, to increase one's fighting spirit
Chronological
  • To restore strength and flexibility to particular joints and muscle groups that have become weak and inflexible as a result of surgery; Focus is on shoulders, neck, chest, upper back and rotator cuff during initial phases of program and abdominals, lower back, and lower extremities during later phases
  • To re-train torso muscles for postural improvements and more efficient body alignment
  • To re-educate the involved muscles to move in a safer, more efficient manner
  • To re-develop deep breathing by restoring mobility in thoracic area (chest, ribcage, and back), thereby allowing for more freedom of movement in diaphragm and lungs
  • To facilitate overall conditioning and to increase physical stamina for faster recovery after surgery and easier tolerance of adjuvant treatments (chemotherapy and radiation)
  • To minimize weight gain, maximize body strength, and improve or maintain muscle tone, body composition, and bone density during and after chemotherapy, radiation, treatment-induced or naturally occurring menopause, and/or hormone treatments, e.g. tamoxifen
  • And above all, to increase one's inner strength and sense of well-being

Please note: Each person's physical condition and recovery will vary significantly. Kindly refer to Periodization, which explains the chronology of the program. All phases have been scientifically designed for your safety and progress. Always begin with Phase 1 to become familiar with exercise guidelines and instructions. Moving forward too quickly could result in injury or discomfort. All questions should be directed to your physicians, nurses, and physical therapists.
