BETH ISRAEL MEDICAL CENTER: BREAST CANCER REHABILITATION CONFERENCE
NEW YORK CITY, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2003
Annie Toglia, MES, ACSM, CSCS, a Medical Exercise Specialist and author of "Staying Abreast, Rehabilitation Exercises for Breast Cancer Surgery" was a featured speaker at the September 13, 2003 seminar on Breast Cancer Rehabilitation sponsored by Beth Israel Medical Center's Department of Rehabilitation Therapies.
The daylong program was held from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the Ash Auditorium of Beth Israel's Singer Division at 170 East End Avenue, 87th - 88th Streets, in NYC. It was attended by sixty (60) health care providers: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, lymphedema therapists, exercise physiologists, medical massage therapists, fitness specialists, and certified personal trainers who work with patients in hospitals, outpatient, or specialized fitness setting. Note: Continuing education credits were offered.
Presenters were: Anthony C. Cahan, MD, FACS, Physician in Charge of the Robert and Helen Appel Comprehensive Breast Service, who discussed Current Surgical Techniques and Their Rehabilitation Implications. Bonnie B. Lasinski, MA, PT, CLT-LANA, Clinical Director, Lymphedema Therapy, Boris/Lasinski School, Woodbury, NY, who addressed Lymphedema Prevention and Management. Meryle Richman, PT, MS, CST, Director, Physical Therapy at Briarcliff and Jefferson Valley, NY, discussed Myofascial Release Techniques and Craniosacral Therapy treatment options for breast surgery. Cynthia L. Teeple, APRN, BC, MSN, ONP, AOCN, Oncology Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Manager, Cancer Institute of NY Medical College, discussed the Value of Exercise for Breast Cancer Patients. Ms. Toglia, a patient advocate and 7-year breast cancer survivor, presented her "Staying Abreast" Exercise Protocol and Methodology designed for immediate and long-term recovery from breast cancer surgery and treatments.
