About Annie Toglia

Annie TogliaAnnie Toglia was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer in April 1996. She underwent mastectomy surgery with TRAM flap reconstruction, a prophylactic mastectomy with implant reconstruction, multiple recontouring and preventive surgeries, and aggressive adjuvant treatments. Annie also endured years of physical therapy to regain and maintain her strength and flexibility, as well as months of Complex Decongestive Therapy for lymphedema. To say the least, she knows the physical and emotional struggles of fighting breast cancer.

She was also faced with the difficult decision of ending her new career as a strength-training specialist for athletes as well as her 13-year private practice in sports medicine fitness training. To fill the gap after her illness, Annie combined the practical knowledge from her personal experiences with her extensive academic background and became a Medical Exercise Specialist. She then developed www.stayingabreast.com, and authored and published Staying Abreast, Rehabilitation Exercises for Breast Cancer Surgery.

Due to the positive response of the medical and rehabilitation communities, Annie is now presenting her Staying Abreast® methodology at educational conferences for health care practitioners. She also outreaches in order to implement Staying Abreast programs at hospitals and cancer centers.

In addition to a B.A. from Purchase College SUNY, a Liberal Arts background in Dance Education at Lehman College CUNY, and formal training in ballet and modern dance techniques, she holds the following fitness certifications: Anatomy and Kinesiology for the Dancer, and Prevention and Treatment of Dance Injuries, 1985, Dance Kinetic Education Institute, NYC; Marymount Manhattan Fitness Specialist, 1986, Marymount Manhattan College, NYC; Health and Fitness Instructor, 1986, American College of Sports Medicine; Flexibility Technician, 1995, Maximum Performance International, NYC; Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, 1995-1996, National Strength and Conditioning Association; Medical Exercise Specialist, 1997/1998, American Academy of Health, Fitness and Rehabilitation Professionals, Sacramento, California.

Annie's vision for Staying Abreast is to raise the awareness of the medical community to help improve quality of life for patients and to help women, both physically and emotionally, who are fighting or living with breast cancer.
