Press & Events: NYS Lymphedema Awareness Day, 2002

1st NYS LYMPHEDEMA EDUCATION & AWARENESS DAY, 2002

Annie Toglia, MES, ACSM, CSCS, author of "Staying Abreast, Rehabilitation Exercises for Breast Cancer Surgery," initiated and helped establish October 17 as New York State Lymphedema Education and Awareness Day. She coordinated the First New York State Lymphedema Education and Awareness Day, October 17, 2002 with NY State Assemblyman Michael J. Spano. Celebration of this day was inspired by Nancy Roberge, PT, MEd, board member of the American Physical Therapy Association, Legislative Committee Chairperson of the American Physical Therapy Association of Massachusetts, and organizer of the first Massachusetts Lymphedema Awareness Day, May 7, 2002 with Senator Susan Fargo.

The following speakers participated in the event at SUNY Purchase College, Anderson Hill Rd., Purchase, in Westchester County: Assemblyman Spano, Annie Toglia, noted breast cancer surgeon Anthony C. Cahan, MD, FACS, of Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Agnes Hospital, and assistant professor of surgery at NY Medical College; Bonnie Lasinski, MA, PT, CLT-LANA, board member of the National Lymphedema Network (NLN) and Lymphology Association of North America (LANA); Cynthia L. Teeple, RN, CS, MSN, AOCN, Oncology Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Manager, Cancer Institute of New York Medical College and clinical professor in Advanced Oncology Nursing at Columbia University; Marsha Hurst, PhD, Director of the Health Advocacy Program at Sarah Lawrence College; Michael Alatriste, PT, educator, and Director of Lymphedema Preventive Care and Treatment, NYC; representatives from the American Cancer Society; and lymphedema patients from the tri-state area whose riveting stories became the driving force behind legislation to improve medical coverage for lymphedema treatments and supplies.
