Hi Annie, My congratulations for making Oct 17th Lymphedema D-day in New York. Major Milestone. Great Job!

This book represents a giant leap forward in women's ability to rehabilitate themselves following breast surgery. Since my mastectomy in 1994, I had been disappointed with the lack of guidance available in this area. Physical therapists shared some effective exercises, but I was concerned that they did not necessarily understand the special needs of breast cancer survivors.

My need for rehabilitation became critical in 1999, when I had bilateral TRAM flap breast reconstruction. Following that surgery, I was determined to regain as much strength and flexibility as I could, and my reconstructive surgeon referred me to Ann Toglia. Ann's exercise program allowed me to regain substantial abdominal strength and improve my upper body strength and flexibility. The exercises were not easy, but I saw immediate progress, which kept me motivated. I am thrilled that this exercise program is now available in print, because I know it will help so many women."

Dear Annie, Your book and I are going to a trainer once I get released to do so. I have to tell you, it really helped me so much after the mastectomies as it has become a solid source of good advice and encouragement. It is almost a year since my original diagnosis and the tunnel is hopefully behind me. The kindness of strangers like you have made this difficult journey very manageable. Know that you make a difference.

Dear Annie, I just finished reading your book and want to thank you for preparing such an important work. It is organized, easily understandable, thorough, and explicit in the explanation of each type of exercise, precaution, how to modify, how to progress. It is a masterpiece that any therapist would be proud to suggest to her patients.

"If the medical community can perform surgery on a football player's knee and rehab him back into condition so he can withstand a 250-pound linebacker coming at him," asks physical therapist, Dr. Michael Jones, "then why can't it develop a rehab program for a breast cancer survivor so she can reach for a coffee cup from the cabinet, so she can carry her briefcase or open a door?" ...Dr. Jones' quote in "She's Leading the Campaign for Exercise After Breast Cancer," an article about Annie Toglia by Jane Opperman, Chicago Daily Herald, Oct., 21, 2002.

"...The name of Annie's book is "Staying Abreast, Rehabilitation Exercises for Breast Cancer Surgery." It is the ONLY comprehensive one out there.

Annie's entire existence is now centered upon helping physical/occupational therapists, physicians, nurses and the population of professionals who work with women with breast cancer - in order that we give them the most accurate information regarding exercise following surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of the three. We have greatly changed our message over the years; where we once told women to rest, take it easy, and recover, we now ask them to KEEP GOING, exercise and continue to MOVE.
